# RURAL REALTIME / MILK (Esther Polak & Ieva Auzina)
During the workshop Esther Polak, Ieva Auzina & Zaiga Putrama went to the East Latvian province of Latgale, to create GIS visualizations of disappearing farming practices and the rural landscape.
INTRO
The international workshop entitled "Locative media" focusing
on GPS, mapping and positioning technologies took place from July 16 - 26,
2003 at the K@2 Culture and Information Centre on an abandoned military
installation in Liepaja on the coast of the Baltic Sea. The workshop brought
together an international group of artists and researchers interested in
notions of mobile geography aiming to explore how wireless networking impacts
upon notions of space time and social organization.
MAPPING ARCHITECTURE
- A semantic web location model was proposed by Jo Walsh, constituting
an RDF
map of physical spaces and the connections between them. In collaboration
with Andrew Paterson, a flexible model was developed to provide participants
with a framework for their media annotations of the physical environment
that includes fields for spatio-temporal as well as subjective elements
to suggest an open model for further locative media projects.

- Radioqualia worked on a Linux based application - beginning experiments
in sending and receiving data using the Sharp Zaurus PDA + various laptops,
as well as some experiments streaming audio on the network to <->
from Zaurus.

MAPS & VISUALISATION
For visualizating location in real time, the workshop used mobile networking
devices (courtesy of the Waag Society) and a Flash application created
by Pall Thayer as well as KeyWorx software also by the Waag Society's
and a .php script created by Jaanis Putrams.
